Berchtesgaden

Königssee and Obersalzberg (Eagle’s Nest – Hitler’s mountain residence)

The Königssee – perhaps the most beautiful lake in Bavaria – lies, wedged like a fjord, between sheer rock walls. On its crystal-clear water you can travel by electric boat – which have been used there for environmental reasons since 1909 – to the pilgrimage site of St. Bartholomä and enjoy the famous echo of the Königssee.

Berchtesgaden impresses with its location in the middle of the mountains and the magnificent view of the Watzmann, probably Germany’s most beautiful mountain. In the newly designed Salt World in the Berchtesgaden salt mine, young and old learn everything worth knowing about salt mining during a guided tour of about one hour. A crossing by raft over the salt lake, accompanied by a mystical light and sound show, is the highlight of every tour.

The Obersalzberg documentation centre. Hitler’s mountain residence (Eagle’s Nest). It was commissioned by the Free State of Bavaria and opened on 20 October 1999.

The exhibition near Berchtesgaden shows the history of the Obersalzberg and links the local history with a presentation of the central manifestations of the National Socialist dictatorship. The exhibition shows over 900 photos, documents, posters, film and sound recordings, some of which have been made accessible to the public for the first time.
